Keep it simple

There is definitely beauty in simplicity. One simple script has left me intrigued, by script I don’t mean a few pages of texts just two words. One very simple script engraved centuries ago in the caves of Edakal “E palama”, is probably the most simple yet cool, intriguing and curious text.

If you’re a tamil or malayalam speaker you’d be able to understand it means

“இப்பழமை” or “ഇ പഴമ”

which literally means “this is old/ancient”.

So someone living centuries ago was so bored and decided to engrave on the rock “this is ancient”, as though we wouldn’t know that the cave is ancient. What did they mean by “this” was it referring to the human like figurine beside it? If it did, what was so ancient about humans?

Or maybe they were able to tell the future, that the script itself is going to become ancient.

Or maybe it was a time traveller from Gen z, who made it back in time and decided to leave a fact, a simple fact.

I might never get the answers as to why was those simple looking fact needed to be engraved and what the writer wanted to say.

But it is one of those simple, yet interesting no-nonsense fact, that can keep you awake for hours. I’m still wondering what was so ancient in the ancient times?
